North Shropshire Early Years Development Project
The North Shropshire Teaching School Alliance secured funding to deliver high quality training for people working with children in the Early Years Foundation Stage across North Shropshire. The purpose of this was for schools and PVI (Private,Voluntary and Independent) settings, including child minders, to work together to raise standards and develop closer working relationships in the Foundation Stage. This was a really exciting opportunity for early years settings to work together to develop practice across North Shropshire. All of the training was delivered by specialists in these areas and was FREE of charge.
The main training focused on the five areas of highest deprivation – the market towns of Ellesmere, Market Drayton, Oswestry, Wem and Whitchurch. This supported high levels of involvement since all providers would be able to travel to their local market town far more easily than to a single venue.
The following priority areas were identified in order to raise standards and consistency of practice;
Early Talk (to address early literacy skills – crucial first step)
Phonics (to address early literacy skills)
Little Big Maths (to address early mathematical skills)
Outdoor Learning (to raise % Achieving a Good Level of Development and to reduce the gender attainment gap)
