SENCO visit to Severndale Specialist Academy - 24th Jan 2017

Severndale Specialist Academy hosted an interactive day for designated Special Educational Need Co-ordinators (SENCOs) in schools within the North Shropshire Teaching School Alliance (NSTSA). The aim of the day was to provide them with support and further understanding of special educational needs of students within mainstream primary schools.

Six SENCOs visited Severndale for the day from St Peters Wem, Market Drayton Infants, Market Drayton Junior School, Whitchurch Juniors, Whitchurch CE Infants and Wilfred Owen Infants. The day was used to identify focused strategies and approaches for supporting all students with special educational needs whatever the level and to share good practice and offer each other support and build a network of people to reach out to for constructive and positive ideas.

Going forward, the SENCO Group plan to continue to support their partnering schools in the NSTSA and have already agreed to have two TA's join them from Market Drayton Junior School to learn how to support communication through specific 'high tech' communication aids. The next SENCO meeting has been arranged and will be a good opportunity to identify next steps regarding the supporting of SEN pupils in the mainstream.

Everyone involved enjoyed the day and the following comments were made:

“I will share strategies with my staff”

“Thank you very much – a great day with knowledgeable staff”

“Great ideas for supporting children with communication difficulties that will have a big impact on their learning”

“Good to work together with Severndale and share knowledge and expertise”
